Analytics can be boring. Except when it's applied to things that people really care about. Enter “PopData.” Using social sentiment analysis, IBM discovered steampunk, a curious fashion trend born from sci-fi, was poised to bust out into mainstream retail. We set this offbeat prediction to an eccentric infographic. The prediction—and the trend-spotting technology—became all the rage:
